Western Province Academy

Terrance Welch
Riding Master
The Western Cape branch of The South African Jockey Academy opened its doors in January 2005. The branch operates from a houses close to the Milnerton Racecourse and is managed by ex jockey Terrance Welch.

The Academy is home to six apprentices who are currently riding in races.

The branch offers a relaxed environment for the apprentices who are performing extremely well since the opening. The expansion to Western Cape was undertaken with great confidence and belief that the apprentices will do well and that each of them will have the opportunity to build good relationships with the Cape owners and trainers thereby allowing them to establish their apprentice careers and grow from strength to strength.

Apprentices may not apply directly to the Western Cape branch for admission. The initial training each year starts at the Academy in Durban and once apprentices are ready to ride in races or have established themselves as race riding apprentices, they are fed through to the branch in Western Cape, Port Elizabeth and the Gauteng Jockey Academy.
